The Basics

While you might picture a scene fromJaws, swimming among the nurse sharks in this area of the reserve is safe as well as thrilling. For the most part, the sharks are harmless to humans, and are familiar with encountering boatloads of tourists. (But don’t touch, because they’ll bite if stepped on or bothered.) Tour guides are allowed to feed the sharks from aboard the boat.

Guided tours typically combine a visit to Shark Ray Alley with Hol Chan, the reserve’s most popular zone. There, you’ll be able to spot coral and marine life like angelfish, turtles, and snapper.

Barrier Reef tour
Swimming with the sharks was exciting. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and the casual swimming along the barrier reef was wonderful.

Belize Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley Snorkel Tour - Ambergris Caye
What an amazing trip! This was our second snorkel or the trip and Jordan and Danny made it a great experience. The reef is in great shape and Jordan made sure to point out many creatures we would have otherwise missed. We saw turtles, nurse sharks, rays and an octopus and had plenty of time to explore.

I had the best time on this snorkel trip! CJ, Kyle, and Siede from Amigos Del Mar made the trip memorable and a lot of fun. At the first stop you get a guided snorkel which was awesome. Siede pointed out many types of fish and coral. Additionally we saw sea turtles, manatees, stingrays, and sharks. At the second stop we were able to swim closely with the nurse sharks! Totally worth the money. It was the best 3-4 hours I spent on San Pedro!

One of the most amazing experiences of our lives! We would highly recommend this tour. While snorkeling the Marine Reserve we had the opportunity to see a manatee, sea turtles, sharks, rays, a lobster, a Morey eel, and more fish and corals than we could count!

The crew was excellent. The captain had a keen eye and spotted turtles, manatees and a crocodile for us. It felt like we got the VIP treatment. I couldn't have been happier!

Father daughter trip 02/20. We both really enjoyed this tour. Best money we spent on entire trip, including our scuba and snorkeling excursions. Staff are very friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable. They deliver what they advertise and more. Be aware the shuttle pick up is near the caves, and not in the city. Renting a car was cheaper than another shuttle to the meeting point.

I really enjoyed our experience. The captain ‘Burger’ and his Cree were very knowledgeable. They were very helpful in instruction from everything to sunscreen to being in the water. We started a practice snorkel and saw a turtle! They gave everyone fruit and water to help stay hydrated. The sharks were amazing! So many! I couldn’t believe it! Not scary. The sharks are docile. The half day was a perfect amount of time to be out and get a great experience.

Unique to the area, you really will experience the sharks and rays. Guides are friendly and informative. I loved that food was not included and I got to choose my lunch. Super tasty. The organizer is sensitive to ship arrivals and departures, so do not hesitate just because this isn’t offered as a cruise line excursion. The locals live by tourism dollars. They will not leave you or allow you to miss your ship. Fantastic snorkeling.

Must-do Activity in Ambergris Caye

Belize Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley Snorkel Tour - Ambergris Caye
We had an amazing morning on this tour! Our captain Sydney (a.k.a. The Birdman) was an exceptional guide who made the morning what it was. Even going as far as to helping us get some great footage on our GoPros by diving up close to the turtles and various fish. He shared a lot of interesting information and facts related to everything throughout the morning, I felt like I learned a lot! Swimming around the nurse sharks while they were being fed chum was a great experience too. Thank you Birdman! Highly recommend this tour.

Nelson and crew took us on an amazing snorkeling trip. We were first timers and they took great care of us. We got to pet nurse sharks and see beautiful fish. We are ready to snorkel again! Thank you so much.

When to Get There

Tour operators generally offer morning and afternoon departures. Some travelers prefer to head out in the morning, since afternoon weather can be unpredictable.

Coral Gardens

Part of the smaller Caye Caulker Marine Reserve, Coral Gardens features an array of colorful coral formations that are easily explored thanks to the relatively shallow water (up to 13 feet, or 4 meters, deep). You’ll also see schools of fish, including grunt and Bermuda chub. Because the area is sheltered from currents and waves, it’s good for beginners—plus the visibility is considered excellent.
